Vanadium

Vanadium is an ultra-trace element, widely found in nature. It is needed by the body in extremely small amounts, yet plays a role in myriad bodily functions. It assists in bone and teeth formation, as well as in energy production. Some researchers believe that vanadium may be involved in blood sugar and fat metabolism. It also may be beneficial for those who have diabetes and hypoglycemia.

Some symptoms of vanadium deficiency may include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and metabolic dysfunction.

Food sources rich in vanadium include parsley, lobster, radishes, dill, whole grains, and olives.

Health benefits of vanadium

  • Assists in bone and teeth formation
  • Suppresses formation of cholesterol in the blood
  • Lowers levels of sugar in the blood
  • Assists in energy production
  • May prevent heart disease

Recommendations

Common recommendations for vanadium are 20–30 mcg per day.

No RDA for this trace mineral has been established.
