Pantothenic acid
Pantothenic acid is a member of the B vitamin complex, also
known as vitamin B5. Like other vitamins in the B vitamin
group, pantothenic acid assists in energy metabolism and is
also a component of coenzyme A. It is important for producing
red blood cells, as well as hormones from the adrenal gland.
The word pantothenic derives from the Greek word pantos, which means "everywhere." It
can be found in all living cells. Therefore, pantothenic acid
deficiency is rare and has not been fully studied. It may
occur in cases of the most severe malnutrition. Some of the
symptoms of pantothenic acid deficiency include headaches,
fatigue, insomnia, tingling of the feet and hands, muscle
weakness and intestinal disorders.
The best food sources for pantothenic acid include yeast,
eggs, vegetables, milk, meats, kidneys, liver, and fish.
