Sea Vegetables

Sea vegetables are neither plants nor animals but classified in a group known as algae. They can be found growing in both salt and fresh water, in rocky landscapes, or coral reefs. Some types of sea vegetables include Kombu, Kelp, Nori, Hijiki, Wakame, Arame and Dulls.

Sea vegetables are rich in many essential nutrients needed to support body’s overall health. Some of these nutrients include iodine, iron, calcium, folate, magnesium, vitamins K and B complex, and lignans, plant compounds with cancer-protective properties.

Sea vegetables are an excellent source of iodine which is necessary for supporting healthy thyroid function. They also have anti-inflammatory and cancer preventative properties. Some research studies suggest that seaweeds may have healing properties for colds, arthritis, tuberculosis and influenza.

In her book, Deirdre Earls suggests to include at least a small amount of sea vegetables into the daily diet as they are alkalizing superfoods.
