DermaHarmony 3% Salicylic Acid Therapeutic Shampoo clears and helps prevent flakes and scalp build-up.  It is clinically proven to control/eliminate/fight/prevent recurrence of dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and/or psoriasis.

• Salicylic Acid is a clinically proven FDA Approved active ingredient. This shampoo bar is a registered OTC drug.
• Salicylic Acid is a naturally occurring compound. It is found in various plants, including white willow bark, wintergreen leaves, and sweet birch.  It is one of only two 'natural' active ingredients approved in the USA for use in medicated dandruff shampoo.  [The other is sulfur.] Salicylic Acid is an exfoliator (keratolytic): It dissolves the "glue" between dead skin cells to wash them away. Salicyic Acid helps unclog hair follicles and can be more effective for those with very oily scalps. It provides gentle anti-inflammatory benefits, which can soothe a red, irritated scalp.

Choosing between salicylic acid, sulfur, and pyrithione zinc depends on whether you need to remove existing flakes (exfoliation) or treat the underlying cause (fungus/bacteria). Salicylic acid is primarily used to exfoliate and remove thick, scaly scalp buildup (keratolytic), making it better for heavy flaking or psoriasis, while pyrithione zinc and/or sulfur primarily target the fungus/yeast causing dandruff. Salicylic acid works faster on existing flakes, whereas zinc is best for preventing new ones.

Dermatologists often recommend rotating between these ingredients (Salicylic Acid, Pyrithione Zinc or Sulfur). For example, use a Salicylic Acid shampoo to clear away thick flakes, then follow up with Pyrithione Zinc or Sulfur to keep yeast in check.

DIRECTIONS

Use on affected areas in place of your regular shampoo. For best results, use at least twice a week or as directed by a doctor. Wet hair thoroughly. Apply bar directly onto hair and massage lather into the scalp for 60-90 seconds. Rinse and repeat.

For external use only. Ask a doctor before use if you have a condition that covers a large area of the body. When using this product avoid contact with eyes.  If contact occurs, rinse eyes thoroughly with water. Stop use and ask a doctor if condition worsens or does not improve after regular use of this product as directed. Keep out of reach of children.  If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

INACTIVE INGREDIENTS

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI): Derived from coconut oil fatty acids and Sodium Isethionate (see below).  SCI, developed in the 1930s, is the largest ingredient in syndet solid shampoo bars due to its high-foaming and non-stripping properties.

Stearic Acid: A saturated, long-chain fatty acid with an 18-carbon chain. It is one of the most common fatty acids found in nature. It is crucial for texture, stability, and conditioning properties in our shampoo bar. Stearic Acid lightly coats the hair shaft, smoothing the cuticle to reduce frizz and improve shine without weighing the hair down.

Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate: A salt of a lauryl alcohol half ester of sulfosuccinic acid. It is a mild anionic (having a negative electrical charge) surfactant providing emollient, emulsifying, and thickening properties.  It is a compound in which the sulfate ion has been replaced by a sulfonated ester, thus providing a safe, effective, and non-irritating cleanser.

Water

Sodium Isethionate: A building block or intermediate compound used in synthesizing SCI. This organic salt isethionic acid was discovered in 1833 by observing the reaction of solid sulfur trioxide on ethanol. It lowers pH while maintaining a high level of detergency and lather. It is one of the gentlest cleansing agents available and has a very low irritation potential.

Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine: An amphoteric (has both positive and negative charges, making it versatile and compatible with various other ingredients and pH levels) surfactant derived from the fatty acids of coconut oil. It acts as a mild cleansing agent, foam booster, and emulsifier, and is known for its ability to reduce irritation from other surfactants.

Cetearyl Alcohol & Ceteareth-20: Cetearyl Alcohol is a fatty alcohol (a solid) derived from plant oils like coconut oil. Unlike "drying" alcohols (e.g. ethanol), it is an emollient that softens skin and hair. Ceteareth-20 is a non-ionic polyoxyethylene ether of higher saturated fatty alcohols. We mostly use a branded version of this ingredient called Emulgade®, which is made by Germany's BASF. It is biodegradable, dermatologically tested, and suitable for sensitive skin.

Phenoxyethanol: A preservative used in cosmetics and personal care products to prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mold. Phenoxyethanol is an incidental ingredient because it is a component of a compound ingredient (volume <1%).

Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil: Commonly known as Jojoba Oil. It is a wax ester derived from the seeds of the jojoba plant. Its unique composition, which closely resembles the skin's natural sebum helps to regulate oil production making is good for both dry and oily skin types as well as acne-prone skin. Jojoba oil is a conditioning additive that helps to moisturized and soften skin and hair.

Sodium Isostearoyl Lactylate: A sodium salt of the isostearic acid ester of lactyl lactate. It adds excellent feel to detergent and emulsion systems. It is also substantive to skin and hair and is hygroscopic (absorbing moisture from the air). It has multiple functions: emulsification, conditioning, hair repair, and moisturization.

Lactic Acid: An organic acid naturally produced by the body and found in various fermented foods. It is a multi-functional ingredient used to improve both the health of your scalp and the appearance of your hair strands.

Sucrose Cocoate: A natural chemical ingredient sourced from coconuts. Sucrose Cocoate is a hydrophilic emollient, meaning that it absorbs water and can help to balance or maintain moisture. It is also has a thickening effect, and can increase the density of foam.
